Text Box: Coming to PBES is the “Pioneer Living” exhibit. It is a traveling, hands-on museum sponsored by PBES PTO on February 5th. Dozens of artifacts turn a school gym into an 1800’s pioneer settlement. This exhibit is different because instead of looking at antiques, student are encouraged to touch! Students participate in pioneer activities such as: panning for fool’s gold (to keep), carding and hand spinning yarn, making a bead necklace (to keep), shaving with a lather brush, grinding corn into flour, playing with hand-made wooden folk toys, washing clothes on a washboard, and rolling out bread dough! Each student will spend about an hour at the workshop.
February 7th at 7pm is DARE graduation. Our 5th graders have been attending DARE classes taught by Peabody Police Chief Bruce Burke since the beginning of the year. DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. DARE gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and is now being implemented in 75% of our nation’s school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world.
February 14th is Valentine’s Day. Parties will start at 2:45pm.
Even though February 18th is listed as a No School day on the calendar, there WILL be school that day. We exchanged this day for a day off during teacher training in October. We WILL see you on the 18th!.
February 19th-22nd, the book fair will be at PBES. This is a great opportunity to buy books at low prices. It also helps the classrooms and library increase their supply of books available for students to read. On February 19th, we will be having a Pajama Reading Day at PBES to kick-off the book fair. We will be sending more information at a later date.

Text Box: Each month has a major holiday and February is no different. February’s main holiday is Valentine’s day. How did Valentine’s come to be?
There are many legends of Saint Valentine. Nobody knows which one is true, but here’s my favorite legend.
When the Roman Empire needed soldiers, the emperor Claudius II said nobody could be engaged or married. He believed marriage made the men want to stay home with their wives instead of going off to war. St. Valentine ignored the Emperor’s request and secretly married many couples. He was Text Box: arrested, imprisoned, and put to death.
There are many traditions in the U.S such as giving chocolates and roses to your loved ones, cooking your loved one their favorite meal, exchanging cards or sending balloons. It used to be that people made their own Valentine’s cards and wrote poems to their loved ones.
Other symbols of Valentine’s include hearts, cupids, flowers birds, love knots, hands, gloves, and garters. A young man would hang his love token on her doorknob and slip a love letter under her door.
Text Box: Long before there was Valentine’s day there were Greek and Roman celebrations dedicated to love and lovers.
Jealous of Psyche’s beauty, Venus ordered Cupid to punish the maiden. Instead Cupid fell in love at first sight, just like Romeo and Juliet. True love endures all things. Don’t forget your love this Valentine’s Day.
